How to store your coffee?

Coffee poster with white jar, beans in a bowl, green leaves and soft light; text: How to store your coffee?

A package that is opened. A fragrance that is revealed. The promise of a beautiful cup of tea.

These aromas are precious. They carry the identity of an origin and the work undertaken from harvest to roasting. At La Réminiscence, we strive to preserve their full expression. Once the coffee is at home, a few simple steps can help extend this care.

Coffee continues to live after roasting.

Its aromas evolve: some dissipate, while oxygen gradually transforms its components. Over time, the cup can lose its clarity and complexity. Properly storing your coffee helps slow this evolution.

For everyday storage, choose an airtight, opaque container and keep it in a dry place, away from heat. Avoid placing it on a windowsill or in a cupboard near the oven. Coffee needs to be protected from air, humidity, and light. Close the container as soon as you've taken your dose.

The right format is the one that suits your pace.

If you only make a few cups a week, opt for small quantities. Buying enough for one to two weeks' consumption is a practical guideline for regularly replenishing your coffee supply.

When using a grinder, keep the beans whole and only grind the amount needed for your brew. Grinding exposes the coffee to more air and accelerates the loss of its aroma. If you choose pre-ground coffee, take extra care when sealing the package and consume it soon after opening.

And the refrigerator?

It might seem reassuring, especially when the kitchen is hot. However, for the coffee you use every morning, a dedicated cupboard is simpler: coffee absorbs moisture and odors, and temperature fluctuations can cause condensation. The freezer can be useful for a supply, provided it's in truly airtight packaging and requires minimal handling.

Finally, allow time for tasting. There's no specific day when all coffees lose their quality: origin, roasting, grinding, and packaging all influence how they evolve. Observe the aroma when you open the bag, then the sensations in the cup. A coffee that becomes less expressive also tells you how much to buy next time.

Taking care of your coffee starts long before you pour the water. It also means choosing where to store it, when to grind it, and how much to keep at home. These subtle gestures help you rediscover in every cup the pleasure that led you to choose this particular origin.

Each coffee is a new encounter with a terroir, aromas, and a story. At La Réminiscence, we carefully select and roast our specialty coffees to help you discover the unique character of each origin.
