Venda Nova do Imigrante is a town located in the lands of the state of Espirito Santo. The Venda Nova region has the highest altitudes in Espirito Santo, with some areas reaching 1600 meters above sea level. It is a mountainous region, located between two high peaks: Pico da Bandeira (2900 m above sea level) and the Pedra Azul National Park. The small town was established and populated by Italian migrants who often worked on the area's coffee plantations. Espirito Santo is a narrow land located south of Bahia and between Minas Gerais and the ocean. Historically, Espirito Santo was known for its production of Robusta (known locally as Conilon). Arabica production had a bad reputation. The high humidity of the air coming from the ocean was a real challenge to properly process and dry the coffee. While the humidity in the air can be a handicap, the high hills and climate create the ideal conditions for producing specialty coffee. The temperature difference (hot during the day and cold at night) allows the cherries to ripen slowly. After the flower season, temperatures can often drop below 10°C at night.
Today, producers are better equipped and have learned to control their drying process. This has helped the region gain visibility in the world of specialty, so much so that the 2017 edition of the Cup Of Excellence was held in Venda nova do Imigrante. The hills of Venda Nova do Imigrante bring together a large number of small producers, whose farms range from 2 ha to 12 ha.
